Need & Wants

Should we go with a dictionary meaning or with the experiences of life? Not everyone is good at books.. one has to unlearn things to learn something new!
The 'needs' come along as you grow up- 'I need food' - 'I want a laptop'- 'I need to sleep' - 'I want to buy a new CD'. We all mix up between needs and wants mistakenly.
When you desire for something- ask first to yourself if it is your 'need' or your 'want' and put it in your priority list accordingly. You will not crave for it unnecessarily.
Just define your needs and wants at an early stage, before you get confused with what you need and what you want- do not mix it up.
Meet your friends regularly- you always need them.
Be with your family, spend time with them- they always need you and vice versa.
Get a hug from all those whom you love- you always need one- good times, and more in bad times.
Be with people- do not isolate yourself in a room, reach out to people.. Everyone has someone who loves them, cares for them..

  1. Actuality,We only need three things to survive:
    (roti,kapda and makan)
    - A roof over our head
    - Enough food and water to maintain our health
Basic health care and hygiene products
    - Clothing (just what you need to remain comfortable and appropriately dressed)

Everything that goes beyond this – a big house, name-brand clothes, fancy foods and drinks, a new car – is a want.

Does that mean that we should only buy the things that we need? Not at all. Life is meant to be lived, not survived. Treat ourself to some wants along the way, but do so when we can afford to, and enjoy those wants as the extras that they are.

  2. Hi Ahmed,

One alternate way to define can be to think of need as something you cannot do without - like water. And want is something you aspire for, but can possibly do without - like becoming wealthy.

While it may be helpful to curtail desire as Nazleen describes (and as is the basic philosophy of Buddhism) to curb disappointment and foster satisfacction, The other side of the coin, to achievement, may be to ensure that your life and career goals become your needs as opposed to remaining your wants or desires.
